The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore recently announced that it will undertake a comprehensive study on Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 15-year-old batter who took IPL 2026 by storm.The research will examine talent development, discipline, mental resilience, leadership and the factors that help young achievers sustain success. The study will also look at the role played by family, coaches and institutions in shaping exceptional talent.Suryavanshi, however, is not the first sportsperson to become the subject of academic research. Over the years, universities and business schools in India and abroad have studied athletes to understand how leaders emerge, how people perform under pressure and what drives long-term excellence.Among Indian cricketers, former captain MS Dhoni’s leadership style was examined in a 2013 management case study titled Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Success Mantra, which analysed his decision-making, leadership approach and ability to handle pressure. Internationally, universities and business schools have also turned successful athletes into classroom case studies.Michael Jordan, the Basketball icon, is widely used as a case study in business and branding courses worldwide.Harvard busines school did a case study on former wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, focusing on personal branding, entrepreneurship and career management.In the United States, Temple University’s Fox School of Business produced a case study on NFL star Jason Kelce, exploring how he built his personal brand beyond the playing field.Academic institutions view elite athletes not just as sporting icons but also as examples of leadership, resilience, branding and long-term success.
