NEW DELHI: A 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district on Wednesday morning, with the epicenter located near Hattarkihal village, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).The seismic event occurred at 7:43:38 AM at a depth of 5 kilometers, specifically 2.5 kilometers northwest of Hattarkihal village in Yaranal gram panchayat of Basavana Bagewadi taluk.The KSNDMC has assured that there is no need for panic among community members, as both the magnitude and intensity of the earthquake were low.“As per the seismic intensity map of the earthquake from the epicentre, the intensity observed is low and the tremor might have been felt up to a radial distance of 50-60 kms from the epicentre,” the monitoring centre stated.“This type of earthquake would not create any harm to the local community as the intensity observed is low, though there might be vibrations felt locally,” the KSNDMC added, noting that the epicenter falls in Seismic Zone III and the region lacks structural discontinuities according to the tectonic map.
