Senior Congressman Deshpande faces flak for sexist remarks

Karwar: Nine-time Congress MLA and former minister RV Deshpande sparked controversy for allegedly making sexist remarks to a woman journalist about a superspecialty hospital in Uttara Kannada district. His conduct drew widespread criticism.During a visit to Ramnagar, Joida, a journalist asked Deshpande when residents would get a superspecialty hospital. Deshpande, who won best MLA award last year, reportedly smiling, said: “Don’t worry, we’ll get yours done in Haliyal,” and reportedly winked. When pressed for a clarification, he said, “When the time for your delivery comes, we will arrange it elsewhere,” before ending the interaction with a curt “Okay.BJP slammed the remarks. “INC’s pattern of disrespecting women continues. First, shameful insults hurled at PM Shri Narendra Modi’s mother. Now, ex-minister Deshpande’s vile comment to a female journalist,” it said on X. BJP state president BY Vijayendra added: “Pregnant women are facing a dire situation due to lack of proper hospitals. Deshpande’s remarks do not befit his age, experience, and dignity. He should apologise.” C Manjula, BJP Mahila Morcha president, said: “Insulting women and mothers reflects Congress’ double standards.” Residents of Uttara Kannada have long demanded a multi-specialty hospital, citing hardships in accessing emergency and advanced care, with many forced to travel long distances to Mangaluru, Udupi, or other districts.
