Unlike many of the big tech companies, chipmaker Nvidia does not offer free cafeteria meals to its employees. According to a report by Business Insider, some former staffers revealed that the food is subsidised which means that part of the cost is covered but workers still have to pay for meals. The report also added that coffee is complimentary, but bottled beverages and drinks from on-site cafes are not. This practice of the company recently drew attention after analyst Gergely Orosz highlighted Nvidia’s relatively sparse workplace perks in a viral X (formerly known as Twitter) thread. “Went to NVIDIA HQ today. Two interesting observations: 1. Snacks and coffee are not free: you have to pay for them. This would be unusual at Big Tech, but no big deal for devs here. “We use this thing called salary to buy stuff we actually need.” Food for thought (literally! ) 2. Inside HQ, Codex and other AI startups have dedicated offices where they hold office hours for NVIDIA employees. Never seen anything like this! I assume because no other large tech company is the kind of “platform” for so much of the tech industry like NVIDIA. The Codex team is v popular here btw as I heard!” wrote Gergely Orosz in a post on X.
A different philosophy
Former employees described Nvidia’s approach as rooted in frugality and focus on work, rather than lavish perks. “Philosophically, I think Jensen has a general belief about separation of pleasure and work,” one said, noting the absence of ping-pong tables, gyms, or massages-on-request. Another added that CEO Jensen Huang, a noted foodie, believes employees should balance their “life’s work” with personal life, rather than being coaxed into staying at the office with free amenities.
Frugality in Nvidia’s DNA
Analysts and ex-employees alike say frugality is deeply embedded in Nvidia’s culture. Hardware companies traditionally operate at thinner margins than software firms, shaping Nvidia’s cautious spending habits. Vice presidents reportedly fly economy and do not have executive assistants, reflecting a “one team” culture of equality. “Being frugal is deeply rooted in Nvidia’s DNA,” said a third employee who no longer works at the company. “Traditionally, hardware companies have always been operating at very thin margins, far below what software companies were doing.”
Nvidia, has a tip for investors across the world
In related news, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has described the recent global technology stock selloff as a major buying opportunity for investors across the world, saying the AI boom is still in its early stages. Jensen Huang’s comments came as technology shares around the world faced pressure following a sharp pullback in AI-related stocks and concerns about a possible US interest rate hike. Speaking in Seoul, Huang said investors should focus on the long-term growth of AI infrastructure rather than short-term market movements. As reported by Blomberg, Jensen Huang, CEO of the world’s most valuable company, was responding to questions about the recent market decline. He said the AI industry is still at the start of a major expansion phase.“We’re at the beginning of it, and whatever happened to the stock market, you should be very happy because now you can buy at a discount,” Jensen Huang said. “Everybody should be very excited,” he added.
