A blue wave has swept through the US Congress, with Democrats making major gains in the 2026 midterm elections. But the White House has struck a defiant note, warning that the party’s attempts to undo President Donald Trump’s agenda over the next two years would fail.In a combative 13-point statement posted on X, the White House took aim at what it called the “Radical Left, the Fake News, and the professional panic class”, declaring: “They will be wrong again.”The statement accused Democrats of planning to roll back Trump’s policies on border security, immigration, energy and taxes, while also seeking to reverse his positions on transgender medical procedures for minors, diversity, equity and inclusion programmes, and censorship. It further warned of efforts to pack the Supreme Court and impeach the president.“President Trump will never stop fighting,” the statement said, setting the tone for what is likely to be a contentious final two years of his term. The statement laid out a 13-point list of policy areas where the administration expects confrontation with Democrats, ranging from immigration and taxation to energy, law enforcement, education and the judiciary. It accused the opposition of preparing to reverse what it described as Trump’s achievements, including border security, mass deportations, tax cuts and expanded domestic energy production.“In the final two years of his presidency, Democrats will try — and fail — to reverse everything President Trump has done,” it said.Among the issues flagged by the White House were a possible reopening of the border, higher taxes, changes to law enforcement policy and a revival of the Green New Deal. The statement also accused Democrats of seeking to restore transgender medical procedures for minors, reinstate race-based diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes, rebuild what it called a censorship regime and reverse measures against waste and fraud. It also warned against attempts to expand the Supreme Court and initiate fresh impeachment proceedings against Trump, describing previous efforts to remove him as failures.“These efforts will fail; the American people have already rejected this agenda,” the statement said, pointing to border enforcement, energy production and the administration’s rollback of DEI programmes as parts of Trump’s record that Democrats would struggle to undo. The message marks an early indication of how the White House intends to approach the final two years of Trump’s presidency, with Democrats set to gain greater control over Congress and the ability to intensify scrutiny of the administration through investigations and hearings. The statement also comes amid Trump’s acknowledgement that the war with Iran contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance in the midterm elections. A day earlier, the president agreed with Vice President JD Vance’s assessment that the conflict had hurt Republicans electorally, citing the short-term increase in petrol prices, while insisting that military action against Tehran was necessary to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons.Despite the electoral setback, Trump indicated that he was open to working with Democrats but warned that he would use his presidential veto if he disagreed with their legislative proposals. On the prospect of another impeachment attempt, he said it could damage the Democratic Party, dismissing the possibility of proceedings against him as being without justification. The Democratic gains are expected to reshape the balance of power in Washington. A majority in the House would give the party greater scope to investigate the administration and summon officials for hearings, while control of the Senate would strengthen its influence over legislation and presidential nominations. The White House statement, however, made clear that Trump intends to resist attempts to dismantle his policy agenda, ending with a declaration of defiance: “President Trump will never stop fighting.”
