Mangaluru: Mangaluru City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy warned of stringent action against those who share details of any Indian on social media, saying that the person is a Bangladeshi merely based on suspicion.Referring to a provocative message on ‘Bengali Canteen’, a canteen run by Bengalis in the city shared on the ‘Hindu Geleyara Balaga’ WhatsApp group, the commissioner said that some people are posting messages that can result in attacks against innocents.“We saw one such attack on a migrant worker who is an Indian in Mangaluru, and police took action. We noticed the above message posted in some group and checked the background of this family (Bengali Canteen), and they clearly have property purchased in 2014 in their name, and there is nothing to show that they are not Indians. If anyone has information about someone suspected to be from Bangladesh, they are welcome to give information at stations or to ACPs or to the commissioner’s office, and we will ensure that the person is prosecuted and deported as per law after proper verification of antecedents,” the commissioner said.He warned that if anyone shares details of any Indian, saying that he/she is a Bangladeshi merely based on suspicion or for whatever reason, or spreads messages in such a way that some people may be attacked, action will be taken against them as per law. FIRs were already booked against two people for posting such messages, and they will be arrested soon, he said.“Anyone staying illegally will be prosecuted and deported as per the law without any exception after following the procedure. Attacking anyone (including those staying illegally) is a crime under the law, and they will also be booked and prosecuted. There is law, and we have people here who have no respect for the law. Action will be taken against them also, only as per the law of the state,” the commissioner warned.
