Mangaluru: A forum of educationists in Dakshina Kannada district resolved to demand Karnataka govt celebrate Savitribai Phule’s birth anniversary as Teachers’ Day.Renni D’Souza, former chairperson of Dakshina Kannada Child Welfare Committee, said that on the birth and death anniversaries of Phule, the education department should issue a circular to remember her during school assemblies. He spoke at the birth anniversary celebration of Phule held at the office of the Padi organisation in the city on Saturday. The birthday of Savitribai Phule was celebrated with respect and pride, recognising her as India’s first female teacher, social reformer, and pioneer in women’s education. In the 19th century, Savitribai Phule was a great figure who fought for women’s education and the rights of Dalits and the oppressed. She courageously stood against social inequality, superstition, and gender discrimination, believing that education is the power for societal transformation. Despite facing much opposition and insults, she never wavered from her mission, D’Souza said.“Phule’s life and work inspire teachers and remind us of the importance of equality, justice, and education. We must all adopt Savitribai Phule’s ideals and commit to building an equal and progressive society through education,” he said.
