Absence of exclusive protest zone creates challenges for Hubballi citizen

Hubballi: The absence of an exclusive protest zone in Hubballi city aggravated inconveniences for residents as protesters were compelled to hold demonstrations on busy roads, disrupting traffic and daily life. Various organisations staged protests over drinking water shortages, poor road conditions, potholes, various social issues, political issues, and implementation of Mahadayi project, but a designated venue remained elusive. For years, KC Circle served as the customary site for demonstrations, but as protesters found it difficult to use that space to submit their demands to the concerned authorities. During the tenure of commissioner Siddlingayya Hiremath, HDMC attempted to notify a protest zone near Mahatma Gandhi Park and planned for basic amenities such as shelter and drinking water, but those measures remained unaddressed owing to the lethargic attitude of succeeding HDMC commissioners. The situation has been exacerbated by the ongoing flyover construction, which has left many roads in Hubballi covered with potholes and dust, and the diversions led to frequent congestion. As a result, protests held in the middle of these already crowded roads are causing significant disruption, adding to the public frustration. The lack of a designated protest area not only inconveniences the locals, but also diminishes the effectiveness of the protests, as they are often met with irritation rather than support.Gurunaath Ullikashi, a social activist, said that the need for a dedicated protest zone is more pressing than ever. “Such a space would provide a structured environment for demonstrators to gather and voice their concerns without causing undue disruption to daily life. It would also facilitate better communication between protesters and authorities, ensuring that grievances are heard and addressed in a timely manner,” he added. The district administration must prioritise a protest zone to balance the citizen’s right to protest with the need to minimise inconvenience for the broader community, he added.CR Raveesh, DCP, crime and traffic, said the city police were considering creation of an exclusive protest zone after recent demonstrations causing traffic jams.He said the proposal would be discussed soon with the DC, HDMC commissioner, and other officials. “After looking at the recent protests and effects such as traffic jams, inconvenience to the public, and others, we are thinking of taking up the matter to create an exclusive protest zone. Soon we will discuss the matter with DC, HDMC commissioner, and soon an exclusive protest zone will be created,” he added.
