Davangere: Police from Azad Nagar station, investigating the attempted murder case of JD(S) leader T Asgar, took Congress functionary Savita Mallesh Naik into custody on Friday. After questioning her and confirming her involvement, they formally arrested her.She was presented before a judge and remanded to judicial custody. On Nov 10, during the Tipu Jayanti event in Basha Nagar, Congress functionary Khalid Pailwan attacked Asgar with a knife. Asgar, who was seriously injured, is receiving treatment at a hospital while police are searching for the absconding suspect.“Investigations revealed that Savita assisted Khalid Pailwan, the suspect in the attempt on Asgar’s life. She provided shelter and financial support to help him evade capture,” a police officer stated.Savita Mallesh Naik was a strong ticket aspirant for the Mayakonda assembly constituency. Disappointed after not securing the ticket, she ran as an independent candidate but was defeated. She later rejoined Congress.
