OPEC Hospital staff blamed for cancer patient’s death

Pic: Srinivas, the deceased patientRaichur: It is alleged that a cancer patient passed away due to the negligence of the staff at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital, commonly referred to as OPEC Hospital, in Raichur city on Thursday evening.The death of 35-year-old Srinivas from Jalan Nagar is said to be linked to significant negligence on the part of the hospital staff. Srinivas, who suffered from esophageal cancer for three to four years, previously underwent surgery at OPEC Hospital. However, due to his deteriorating health in recent days, he became dependent on oxygen and was admitted to OPEC Hospital on the morning of Sept 18 because of breathing problems.The doctors who commenced treatment, suspected a blood vessel blockage and advised a scan in the evening. In response, the family decided to transfer Srinivas to RIMS Hospital. However, while transferring him from the ICU ward for scanning, the oxygen cylinder ran out.Srinivas, experiencing severe respiratory issues, was immediately returned to the ICU, but he died shortly thereafter. His family alleges that the tragedy occurred because the staff did not check the oxygen cylinder.Late Srinivas is survived by his wife and a two-year-old child. The incident falls under the jurisdiction of Raichur Rural police station, and the family has demanded legal action against the hospital staff. However, no official complaint has been filed so far.Dr Ramesh B Sagar, the special officer at OPEC Hospital, was unavailable for comment.
