Bengaluru: A thief struck a locked house in northern Bengaluru when the family was away attending a relative’s funeral in Davanagere district, and made away with valuables worth Rs 40 lakh.The incident occurred at MS Ramaiah Layout of Nagasandra between 1.20am and 3am Tuesday.Complainant Darshan, director of a coaching centre at Jayanagar, received a message Sunday about his uncle’s death in Davanagere district. Along with his parents, he locked the house and left the same night for the funeral. He returned around 6am Tuesday, only to find the front and back doors and a window open. He alerted his neighbours about the incident and then informed the police.A burglar, who managed to break into the house through the window, went to a room and stole valuables from the almirah. Clothes and other valuables were scattered all over the floor. The miscreant also opened the wardrobe in the adjacent room and emptied the valuables from it.According to Darshan, the stolen valuables worth Rs 40 lakh included 297 grams of gold ornaments — four bracelets, a necklace and coins — silver articles weighing 4kg, Rs 2.5 lakh in cash, and a mobile phone.A senior officer said that when they verified CCTV footage of the surrounding buildings, they found a thief walking barefooted, entering the house, filling a bag with the stolen valuables, and escaping.A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 305 (theft in a dwelling house, or means of transportation or place of worship) and 331 (punishment for house-trespass or housebreaking), and efforts are ongoing to nab the thief.
