Mangaluru: The tourism department, as per the 2025-26 budget announcement, plans to develop a resort at Tannirbhavi Beach. Accordingly, the department invited tenders for the appointment of a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The department also plans to develop a resort in Kodikal, on the banks of the Gurupur River.Under the Karnataka Tourism Policy 2024-29, an investors’ meet was organised in Mangaluru on Feb 19, to chalk out plans for tourism development in the coastal region, including Mangaluru city. The tourism department identified 44 tourism nodes across coastal Karnataka that can be developed through private partnership in phases, according to officials.MLC Ivan D’Souza said that the bids for the tender process for the appointment of a consultant to prepare a DPR to develop a resort in Tannirbhavi were opened on Aug 7. Three bidders participated in the tender process, and the tourism department is in the process of finalising the consultant.“I have brought to the notice of tourism minister HK Patil that a lack of a five-star hotel in Mangaluru has been posing a hindrance to attracting investors to the city. The minister has said that two resorts, one in Tannirbhavi and another on the banks of the Gurupur River in Kodikal, will be developed,” D’Souza said.On the proposal to develop a resort at Kodikal, the MLC said that tenders to appoint a tourism adviser were invited for the project. As per the tender conditions, only those bidders who are empanelled with the infrastructure development, ports and inland water transport department were allowed to participate in the tender process. However, during a pre-bid meeting, representatives of interested bidders requested to make the tender process open for all. Hence, an open tender will be invited soon, he said, adding that various similar proposals of the govt will attract investors to the coastal districts.
