Hourly forecasts put the chance of rain at 51% at 10am, 47% at 11am, 44% at noon, 48% at 1pm and 52% at 2pm. The probability then stands at 45% at 3pm, 39% at 4pm and 34% at 5pm before rising slightly to 40% at 6pm.
After Day 2 was reduced by rain, another stop-start day could be in store for India and Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s team management will also be concerned by the performance of their two pacers, Kumara and Fernando, who struggled to take wickets and contain India’s scoring.
Suthar’s contribution will please the Indian team management, with captain Shubman Gill having stressed before the match that the lower order needed to contribute with the bat in the absence of injured all-rounders such as Washington Sundar.
