NEW DELHI: In a major breakthrough in the crackdown on international drug networks, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured the return of fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Basoya, accused of orchestrating a massive multi-crore cocaine syndicate, was brought back to face trial following sustained inter-agency coordination and international legal action.Union Home minister Amit Shah confirmed the development. In a post on X, he said: “Modi govt is relentlessly tracking down drug traffickers hiding abroad and destroying their entire ecosystem with a ruthless approach. Creating a new milestone in the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics, the NCB secured the return of fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya from the UAE.”“By tracing the criminal through a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach, our agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law,” he said.The arrest marks a significant milestone in the Union government’s zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and international drug trafficking networks operating across borders.Basoya emerged as a key mastermind following one of the largest drug seizures in recent history, involving cocaine shipments valued in excess of ₹5,000 crore. As law enforcement agencies closed in on the syndicate’s distribution networks, Basoya fled the country to evade arrest.Following detailed investigative trails, a Delhi court had previously issued a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) against him, enabling Indian agencies to initiate red notices and pursue extradition proceedings through diplomatic and international policing channels in the UAE.Officials stated that the operation relied on a dual “top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top” investigative framework. By mapping local street distribution networks upward while simultaneously intercepting high-level financial and logistical chains, the NCB successfully pinpointed Basoya’s foreign hideout.Senior law enforcement officials highlighted that the successful extradition sends a firm signal to fugitives attempting to seek refuge overseas:Basoya has been taken into NCB custody and will be presented before a specialized court in New Delhi.Investigators plan to interrogate him regarding international supply routes, financial money-laundering channels, and local accomplices linked to the multi-crore drug cartel. Further custodial disclosures are expected to assist in dismantling remaining nodes of the syndicate.
