India’s campaign at the BWF World Championships has reached a defining stage, with Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand becoming the country’s only remaining representatives. The women’s doubles pair enters the semifinals on Saturday after confirming India’s first medal of the tournament with a quarterfinal victory over China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian. They will now face another Chinese challenge — top seeds Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning — in the semifinals on Court 1 at around 2.40 pm.
With Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty eliminated in the men’s doubles quarterfinals on Friday, all of India’s hopes now rest on Treesa and Gayatri. The unseeded Indian duo has already secured at least a bronze medal, but a win on Saturday will take them into the World Championships final for the first time.
