HC upholds Goonda Act order against gangster

Udupi: The high court has upheld the order issued under the Goonda Act against notorious gangster Kabir alias Kabir Hussain, 46, a resident of Koudoor village, Karkala taluk. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said that Kabir was identified as an active member of the Garuda gang and was involved in criminal activities in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru districts.He said a recommendation to invoke the Goonda Act was made to the district magistrate, also the deputy commissioner of Udupi, on the basis of a report submitted by the inspector of Karkala town police station. After examining all criminal cases registered against him, the district magistrate issued a detention order on July 10, 2025. The sub-inspector of Karkala town police executed the order on the same day, and Kabir was sent to the Central Prison, Mysuru. The Karnataka high court upheld the district magistrate’s decision and confirmed Kabir’s Goonda Act for one year, effective from July 10, when the matter came up on Aug 4, the SP said.As per the police records, 17 criminal cases have been registered against Kabir since 2005. Out of these, he was convicted in two cases, acquitted in eight due to hostile witnesses, three were settled through compromise, two are pending in trial courts, and investigation is under way in two remaining cases.He was convicted in a 2012 case registered at Sringeri police station of Chikkamagaluru district for assault on police personnel. The court sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000, the SP said.
