Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has finally initiated work on setting up a construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing plant. The facility, sanctioned by the Mysuru Development Authority, will be established on a 9-acre plot at Hanchya-Sathagalli, off the Outer Ring Road, at a cost of Rs11.7 crore.MCC has already begun collecting construction debris and dumping it at the Hanchya-Sathagalli site. Of the 500 tonnes of solid waste generated daily in the city, nearly 100 tonnes comprise construction and demolition waste.The civic body accelerated the project as it is a key criterion for improving Mysuru’s ranking in the cleanliness index.As part of the Swachh Survekshan survey, teams from the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs are expected to visit the city in mid-March. They will assess the preparedness of the plant and the arrangements made to lift C&D waste from residential areas. The teams are also likely to verify whether the collected waste is being properly segregated and processed. In the absence of a dedicated facility, several instances of illegal dumping had been reported near waterbodies, vacant plots, abandoned stretches of the Outer Ring Road, parks, lake banks, canals, stormwater drains, and other open areas. Although the MCC made arrangements to prevent people from dumping construction waste, incidents of people dumping such waste near water bodies, vacant land, abandoned stretches of the Outer Ring Road, parks, banks of lakes and canals, stormwater drains, and several other places were reported in the absence of a proper processing facility in the city.To manage C&D waste, MCC has deployed 10 tippers to collect debris from residential areas. A small portion is currently being dumped at the Vidyaranyapuram site as well as Hanchya–Sathagalli.KS Mrityunjaya, nodal officer for Swachh Bharat Mission, told TOI that all approvals for the C&D plant have been cleared and the corporation will soon begin processing waste at the site. The plant will have the capacity to process 100 tonnes of C&D waste per day.The recycled material—such as concrete bricks, crushed concrete bricks, and aggregates—will be used for road construction, industrial applications, pavement blocks, and related works, he added.MCC commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif said the civic body has made all preparations for establishing the plant and will soon begin processing construction waste in the next four months. The initial stages of work on the plant already began at the site, he said.
