Bengaluru: Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot Monday urged citizens to exercise their vote responsibly by electing representatives who understand the core spirit of the Constitution, stressing that democracy must be preserved through continuous questioning and dialogue.Addressing citizens on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day parade at Manekshaw Parade Ground, Gehlot said the responsibility of safeguarding India’s democratic framework ultimately rests with the people, echoing Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on active and informed citizenship.Reflecting on the relevance of the Constitution in contemporary times, the governor said India continues to live in peace because of its constitutional values, adding that the belief that the Constitution protects those who protect it has only strengthened over the years.Highlighting Karnataka’s governance priorities, the governor said the state is focused on social justice, economic empowerment, and inclusive development by treating liberty, equality and fraternity as guiding principles. He pointed to major welfare initiatives, including large-scale public spending on the govt’s guarantee schemes, which he said has improved purchasing power, empowered women, and strengthened last-mile delivery by directly transferring benefits to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.Around 1,400 children from two BBMP schools performed two dances while 650 students from the BCCW Composite College in Herohalli and another group of 750 children from Govt High School in Bagalagunte also took part in the cultural celebrations.
