BENGALURU: An 18-year-old college student faced a terrifying ordeal when a stranger harassed her in east Bengaluru recently. She was out shopping for daily necessities when the incident occurred.According to the complaint filed by the girl’s mother, her daughter was harassed between 7.45pm and 8pm on July 11. The girl, residing near Nagawara, took her scooter and went out shopping after informing her parents.She reached near the shop at 7.45pm, parked her two-wheeler and was waiting to cross the road. Suddenly, a stranger approached her and hugged her from behind.When she protested, he held her tightly.He forcibly held her face and started kissing her apart from touching her inappropriately. After a few minutes of harassment, she managed to push him away and ran towards her scooter. The man ran behind her for some distance and started abusing her. The girl approached two persons who were passing by and explained what the miscreant did to her.As the two men started heading towards the stranger, he fled the spot. The shocked girl rushed back home and told her parents about the incident. The parents counselled her and approached police the next day to lodge a complaint.According to a senior police officer, the incident has left the girl traumatised. She is scared even to step out of her house and had to be counselled by cops to come to the spot for a mahazar.A case was registered under BNS Sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment) and 78 (stalking).The accused, Mohammed Maruf Sheriff, 28, who owns a pet (bird) shop, has been arrested.According to residents, police have to take strict action against such perverts so that they get scared to commit such crimes.
