Madikeri: Tribal leaders from Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada have urged the Karnataka govt to establish a separate corporation dedicated to the welfare of the Jenu Kuruba and Koraga communities, citing continued neglect and lack of access to govt benefits. The demand was raised during a meeting of the Jenu Kuruba and Koraga Community Association held at Basavanahalli in Kushalnagar.M Sundar Daluvayu, president of the Koraga and Jenu Kuruba Union, said both communities are recognised as among the most vulnerable tribal groups but continue to face exploitation and social exclusion. He alleged that access to education and govt welfare schemes remains limited, while long-pending demands for land and housing have not been fulfilled citing non-availability of govt land. Daluvayu said a representation submitted to the chief minister had failed to evoke a response and stressed the need for immediate action, including the formation of a separate corporation to ensure overall development and support traditional livelihoods such as beekeeping.Union vice-president Jenukurubara Rajappa said the Jenu Kuruba population is spread across Kodagu, Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts, yet even educated youth from the community are struggling to find employment. He also demanded the reopening of the beekeepers’ association office in Hunsur, which has remained closed since 2010, stating that its revival is essential for the welfare of the community.JT Kalinga, Kodagu district president of the Jenu Kuruba community, alleged that govt welfare schemes are failing to reach tribal residents.
