Tiger kills cow in Nallur village, fear grips south Kodagu

Madikeri: Tiger attacks continued in south Kodagu, with a cow killed in Nallur village under the Ponnappasanthe gram panchayat limits on Saturday.The incident occurred when villager Kokkalemada Somaiah had taken his cattle out for grazing. A tiger suddenly attacked, forcing Somaiah to flee for safety. The big cat went on to kill one of the cows.Following the incident, forest department officials rushed to the spot. Ponnampet RFO Gangadhar, DRFO KG Divakar, along with the Rapid Response Team (RRT), inspected the area. The team launched a combing operation to trace the tiger, installed camera traps, and placed a cage in an attempt to capture the animal.Karnataka State Farmers’ Association district president Manu Somaiah also visited the site and demanded swift action from the authorities. He pointed out that the same villager had lost another cow to a tiger attack a few days ago and alleged that forest officials had failed to capture the animal despite installing camera traps. He warned that farmers would initiate legal action if the tiger was not captured within three days.Gram panchayat member Robin said at least three cattle had been killed by tiger attacks in recent days in the village. He added that fear has spread to nearby villages such as Besagur, Kirugur, Ponnappasanthe, and Bellur, with plantation workers reluctant to enter coffee estates.Meanwhile, ACF of the Thitimathi range, Gopal, said the tiger involved in the attacks had been identified. The animal is believed to be around five to six years old and has been code-named 23 KH 31, originating from the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve.
