Ballari: A district-wide road safety awareness campaign will be conducted in Ballari from Jan 1 to 30.Announcing this here on Tuesday, Rajesh N Hosamane, member-secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and senior civil judge, said the campaign is being organised following directions from the executive chairman of the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) in collaboration with the Ballari DLSA, all taluk legal service committees and other depts concerned. Rajesh said awareness marches, street plays and road safety programmes will be conducted at educational institutions to promote adherence to traffic rules, accident prevention and safe driving practices among students, youth and the general public.Attributing the rise in accidents to poor compliance with traffic regulations, SLSA has directed different depts, including transport, police, traffic, education, public works, health and family welfare, the NHAI, bar associations, insurance companies, NGOs, schools, colleges, public-private institutions, community centres, clubs and hospitals to organise road safety programmes and create public awareness. Rajesh said: “It is essential to educate people, especially school and college students, about traffic rules.” He flagged issues like the growing number of vehicles and improper parking, urged the authorities to identify parking spaces, called for cases against parents of minors found driving. Broken-down vehicles on NHs must be moved to the roadside for repairs, he said, and sought cooperation from the district administration, the ZP, police, transport and education depts, and other urban local bodies for effective implementation.
