Gold jewellery worth Rs 45.8 lakh stolen in train

Udupi: An elderly woman travelling with her family from Mumbai to Udupi was allegedly robbed of gold jewellery and cash while she was asleep on a train.The complainant, Helmina Salins, 78, a resident of Chembur, Mumbai, Maharashtra, was travelling to Udupi along with her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter on Dec 26. They were travelling in Matsyagandha Express (train No. 12619), carrying a vanity bag containing gold jewellery, a handbag with clothes, and suitcases.After boarding the train at 3.10pm, the complainant kept the vanity bag containing the jewellery near her head and slept during the night. On Dec 27, around 6.10am, while the train was passing Murudeshwar railway station, the complainant’s daughter noticed that the vanity bag was no longer near her mother’s head and was instead found near the train’s tea table.Upon checking the bag, it was found that gold jewellery weighing 408g, valued at Rs 45.8 lakh, and cash amounting to Rs 15,000 were stolen by unidentified persons. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Manipal police station.
