Activists demand strict law to curb honour killings

Shivamogga: Writer and activist Ravikumar Telex and activist Deshadri Hosmane on Saturday demanded a strict law to curb honour killings in Karnataka.Speaking to reporters, Ravikumar condemned the recent murder of a pregnant woman, Manya Patil, in Hubballi’s Inam Veerapur. The couple married against the family’s wishes, and the incident sparked outrage.“Such incidents are a blot on the state, we urge govt to take strict action against those responsible,” he said. He added that intercaste marriages were a solution to caste-based discrimination, as advocated by social reformers like Basavanna and BR Ambedkar. Activists across Karnataka have started a social media campaign, seeking opinions on how to curb such incidents. They plan to meet chief minister Siddaramaiah soon to demand a separate law, dubbed the ‘Manya Act,’ to tackle honour killings, Ravikumar said.
