Special Christmas prayers held at Amalodbhava Maate Church in Mandya

Mandya: Special Christmas prayers were held at the historic Amalodbhava Maate Church, popularly known as the Immaculate Conception Church or Ganjam Church, located on the outskirts of Srirangapatna in Mandya district. Recognised as the first Catholic church in the Mysuru region, the more than 225-year-old place of worship witnessed a large gathering of devotees who assembled to celebrate Christmas in a prayerful atmosphere. The church was built in 1800 by French missionary Fr Abbe Dubois and holds historical and religious significance. Fr Abbe Dubois, who lived among the local people during his missionary work, played a key role in spreading education, healthcare, and religious values in the region. He earned the affectionate title “Dodda Swami” for his service, particularly for bringing medicines from France to treat people during a chickenpox outbreak at the time. On Dec 7, the church marked its 225th anniversary in a grand manner in the presence of the Bishop and clergy. The church houses the original pedestals of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary installed by Fr Abbe Dubois, which have been carefully renovated while preserving their original form. Devotees from nearby villages and from Mandya, Mysuru, and surrounding districts visited the church to offer prayers.Speaking to TOI, Parish Priest Fr John Sagaya Pushparaj said that as part of the 225th-year Christmas celebrations, special midnight worship services were held on Dec 24, followed by morning prayers on Dec 25. He said the services were conducted in a peaceful and devotional ambience. This year, a 30-foot Christmas star was erected in front of the church, adding to the festive spirit. The massive metal bell brought from France by Fr Abbe Dubois and installed on the left side of the church entrance continues to be a major attraction. Built with wood and lime mortar, the church structure and its interiors, adorned with paintings depicting the life of Christ, continue to inspire visitors. Elected representatives, including the local MLA, and leaders of various religious communities participated in the celebrations.Fr Pushparaj added that the church, which comes under the Mysuru Diocese, is among the oldest in Karnataka and still preserves the attire of Fr Abbe Dubois. He said a request has been made to the govt for support to renovate the historic structure, and once assistance is received, plastering and conservation works will be taken up at the earliest.
