Mandya farmer ends life over crop loss, debt

Mandya: A debt-ridden farmer from Kalakempanadoddi village of Malavalli taluk died by suicide after allegedly consuming poison on Oct 31.The deceased is Ramalinga, 49. Though he was rushed to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) Hospital for treatment, he breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.According to sources, Ramalinga grew bananas on his two-acre land, sourcing saplings from Bengaluru. Less yield and disease affecting the plantation pushed him to the edge.According to the complaint filed by Ramalinga’s wife Sowmya at Malavalli Rural police station, her husband borrowed large sums from a cooperative society, private financiers, and women’s self-help groups (in her name) to fund agriculture. But the inability to repay these loans prompted him to take the extreme step, she told cops.Police are investigating the case.
