Important to preserve Kodagu’s coffee heritage for future generations: MLA

Madikeri: The 146th Annual General Meeting of the Coorg Planters Association (CPA) highlighted the importance of preserving Kodagu’s coffee heritage for future generations.AS Ponnanna, chief minister’s legal adviser and Virajpet MLA, emphasised the need to honour the legacy of coffee growing passed down by previous generations. He urged the community to support initiatives by the Coorg Planters’ Association to address challenges facing the coffee industry, such as environmental sustainability and waste management.Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda addressed the impact of adverse weather conditions on coffee growing, noting the damage caused by prolonged rains. He assured that the govt is committed to repairing damaged roads and addressing issues like labour shortages and pest infestations. Efforts are also under way to improve infrastructure for coffee transportation.Coorg Planters’ Association president A Nanda Belliappa highlighted ongoing discussions with the govt on various issues affecting coffee growers, including land rights and compensation for rain damage. The association is also collaborating with the Coffee Dasara festival to promote coffee cultivation.The meeting underscored the importance of increasing coffee consumption both locally and nationally.Manthar Gowda encouraged the community to embrace coffee culture, noting the rise of coffee cafes and the growing interest among the younger generation.The event was attended by various stakeholders, including govt officials, coffee growers, and representatives from related associations.
