Two cousins drown after heroically saving boy from canal

Mysuru: Two cousins drowned after rescuing a boy from the Varuna Canal on the outskirts of Mysuru city on Saturday. The tragedy took place near Badagalahundi village in Mysuru taluk.According to police, Manju, a boy from the village, had gone swimming in the canal when he was swept away by the strong current. Hearing his cries for help, cousins R Nandan, 25, and R Rakesh, 20, who were passing by after collecting manure, jumped into the water. They managed to pull the boy to safety but were themselves caught in the strong current and drowned moments later. Nandan, son of Ramesh, got married just 15 days back to a woman from Channapatna. Rakesh was the son of Ramesh’s brother.The bodies were later recovered and sent to KR Hospital for postmortem. After the autopsy, they were handed over to the grieving family. The last rites were performed on Sunday.Varuna police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
