MU Syndicate defers promotion of non-teaching staff

Mangaluru: The promotion of 23 non-teaching staff members at Mangalore University (MU) has been temporarily put on hold after the Syndicate decided to defer the discussion for further review. While the move to push the agenda to the next Syndicate meeting sparked speculation that the body might be opposing the promotions, Syndicate members clarified that there was no such objection. They explained that the item was introduced as a table agenda at the last minute, leaving little time for detailed discussion.Syndicate members said that the decision to postpone the discussion was purely procedural, aimed at ensuring transparency and compliance with the govt’s new internal reservation guidelines expected to be issued soon. The Syndicate, chaired by the vice-chancellor, is expected to take up the matter in its next Syndicate meeting. As per the govt order and audit objections, the seniority lists of non-teaching staff of MU were revised from 1980 onwards. The final seniority lists, published as of Jan 1, 2025, are presented for Syndicate approval along with the proposal to fill the vacancies based on these seniority lists.Syndicate member Raghuraj said that when the agenda of promotion of non-teaching staff was tabled, it was misinterpreted that they were against it. However, we were not against it. The decision was deferred since the item was included as a table agenda and a new govt order regarding internal reservation in recruitment is expected soon. Therefore, Syndicate members suggested that this agenda item be placed before the next Syndicate meeting.Raju K Mogaveera, registrar, MU, said that the promotions were done in accordance with the rules.
