Hubballi: In a creative and impactful move, the Auto Drivers’ Association in Hubballi took a stand against the escalating dust pollution that is plaguing the city. The association launched a unique protest by organising a mask distribution drive, aiming to draw the attention of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and urge them to take immediate action to address the issue. This initiative was particularly focused on areas like KC Circle, near the Old Bus Stand, and other parts of the city that were severely affected by dust.Auto drivers, who spend most of their time driving on roads, are among the worst-affected by dust pollution. They have been experiencing health issues such as respiratory problems, eye irritation, and skin allergies due to constant exposure to dust. By distributing masks, they not only protected themselves and the public, but are also sending a strong message to the authorities about the severity of the problem.The mask distribution drive was also a public awareness campaign, highlighting the importance of wearing masks to protect against dust and pollution, especially in urban areas where air quality is deteriorating. The association hoped that this initiative will encourage more people to join their cause and press the HDMC to implement effective measures to reduce dust pollution.The association also called for HDMC to take immediate steps such as regular street cleaning, planting more trees, and implement stricter regulations on construction activities that contribute to dust. They believed that with collective effort and proper planning, the dust problem in Hubballi could be significantly reduced, improving the quality of life for all residents.Shekharayya Mathapati, president of the Uttara Karnataka Autorickshaw Owners and Drivers Association, said that the mask distribution drive will continue. He stated that some donors sponsored masks for distribution and that more masks will be distributed if additional donations were received, given that there are 17,000 autorickshaws in Hubballi. Mathapati highlighted that many auto drivers are facing severe respiratory and heart issues. He expressed concern that if something happened to them, their families would suffer badly. He urged the authorities to seriously consider mitigating the dust issue.
