Mysuru: The Dasara festival in Mysuru is a grand celebration that draws visitors from all over the country and beyond.Among the myriad of events that take place during this festive period, the Dasara air show, laser and drone show, and the torchlight parade stand out as some of the most anticipated attractions. These events captivate audiences with their spectacular displays and have become integral to the festival’s allure. However, the growing popularity of these events has led to a major challenge given that the present venue, the Banni Mantap Grounds, where these events are organised during the Dasara celebration, is unable to accommodate the vast number of spectators eager to witness these spectacles. The Banni Mantap Grounds in north Mysuru, with a seating capacity of 32,000, falls short when faced with the lakhs of visitors who wish to partake in the festivities. This has resulted in disappointment among many who are unable to secure a spot to enjoy the shows. The limited space not only restricts the number of attendees but also leads to congestion, making it difficult for those present to have an enjoyable experience. Overcrowding can also pose safety risks, which is a concern for both organisers and attendees. Two years ago, the Yuva Dasara programme, another popular event, was successfully relocated to a venue outside Mysuru. This move was well received, as it catered to the needs of music lovers while reducing some of the congestion within the city. Taking a cue from this, there is a growing demand for the air show, laser and drone shows, and torchlight parade to be held at a more spacious place. Such a move would not only accommodate a larger audience, but also enhance the overall experience by providing a more comfortable and safer environment.A senior police officer said relocating these events to a larger venue would also have many benefits with regard to traffic management and accommodating more people without any hassles. It would ease traffic congestion in the heart of Mysuru, making it easier for both locals and tourists to navigate the city during the festival. The officer admitted the challenges involved in organising the torchlight parade soon after the Dasara procession culminates at the same venue – Banni Mantap Grounds. Given the growth of the population and increase in vehicle numbers over the years, more challenges have arisen. As it can only accommodated 32,000 people in the grounds, many visitors enjoy air and laser shows from outside the venue. Down the line, we have to think of changing the venue, the officer said.Another officer suggested holding an air show, torchlight parade, and laser show in Srirangapatna, where the Mysuru Dasara celebration was commenced by Raja Wadiyar in 1610. This would address many challenges like traffic, parking, and providing adequate space for tens of thousands to witness the spectacle. The officer, on condition of anonymity, stated that even the one-way traffic rule isn’t effective because of the influx of vehicles from all over India. An alternate open venue on the outskirts should be identified to hold shows like the air show, laser, and torchlight parade.
