Udupi food delivery executive duped of over Rs 1 lakh in online crypto scam via Telegram

UDUPI: A food delivery executive from Udupi fell victim to an online cryptocurrency fraud, losing over Rs 1 lakh after being lured with promises of high returns through a Telegram contact.In a complaint, Damodhar Manjunath Singanakuli, 26, employed with the food delivery company, stated that on Sept 9, while returning home by train from Puri and browsing social media on his mobile phone, he came across a person on Telegram who claimed that investing in Bitcoin could yield high profits. Believing this, the complainant initially transferred Rs 1,010 to the accused via UPI, upon which the accused credited Rs 453 as profit into the complainant’s account.Convinced of the scheme, the complainant later transferred Rs 54,510 to the UPI ID provided by the accused and another Rs 50,000 to the SBI account given by the accused. Subsequently, when the accused insisted that more money be invested in order to withdraw the profits, the complainant realised it was a fraud scheme.In this connection, a case was registered at Udupi Town Police Station under Section 318(4) of BNS and Section 66(D) of the IT Act.
