Patrick Mahomes’ retirement timeline takes a surprising turn as Chiefs trainer reveals his 10 Super Bowl goal

Patrick Mahomes has a big goal for his NFL career, and it could decide when he finally walks away from football. His longtime trainer, Jeff Christensen, says the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback once told him that he would consider retiring after winning 10 Super Bowls. Mahomes has already won three championships, but according to Christensen, his focus remains on becoming the greatest quarterback in NFL history rather than making more money.

Jeff Christensen explains Patrick Mahomes’ retirement plan and 10 Super Bowl goal

Speaking on Fearless with Jason Whitlock on Thursday, Christensen shared a conversation he had with Mahomes when the quarterback was a rookie in 2017. He asked the young player about his “get out” number, meaning the point at which he would feel ready to leave football behind.Christensen explained that some players claim money does not matter to them, but their attitude toward the game can change after they sign big contracts. Mahomes, however, gave him an answer that stood out.“Patrick said, ‘My get out is the wins when I win my 10th Super Bowl,’” Christensen recalled. The answer showed that Mahomes had set a clear target for his career from an early age. Instead of naming a salary or a financial goal that would convince him to retire, he pointed to winning championships. His trainer believes that ambition has continued to guide his choices as his career has moved forward.Christensen also remembered telling Mahomes in July 2017 that he had the ability to become the greatest quarterback ever. He said he saw something special in the young player and later shared that view with Matt Kafka before the Chiefs traded Alex Smith.“He just had it,” Christensen said.He also praised Mahomes for staying true to what he said he wanted to achieve. “He does not care about money. He wants to be the greatest. And so his action plan is exactly on schedule.”Christensen’s comments describe how he sees Mahomes’ approach to football, rather than confirming when the quarterback will retire. Mahomes has not announced a retirement date, and winning 10 Super Bowls remains a goal, not a confirmed outcome.

Patrick Mahomes has three Super Bowl wins as Chiefs quarterback

Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls with Kansas City and earned three Super Bowl MVP awards. His first championship came in Super Bowl LIV, when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers. He later led Kansas City to further titles, building a record that puts him among the most successful quarterbacks of his era.He also became the youngest quarterback to win both the regular-season MVP award and the Super Bowl MVP award in the same season, achieving the feat during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV campaign. However, his latest career goal comes as Kansas City works through challenges on the field. Mahomes recently addressed reports of a disagreement with offensive lineman Josh Simmons during a team meeting with head coach Andy Reid. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said the situation had not taken his attention away from the team’s work.“Stuff like that doesn’t really bother me because I’m so in the moment, in the team,” Mahomes said. “We’ve had the right conversations now. We’re moving in the right direction.”Mahomes also explained why difficult discussions can matter inside a team. “You have to be able to have tough conversations so that you can have better conversations going forward,” he said.Simmons has not played this season because of a back issue, while undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has started in his absence. Simmons could return from injured reserve in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals on November 22.
