Udayagiri PS bifurcated, but staff concern lingers

Mysuru: The densely populated north-east of Mysuru, which witnessed frequent clashes between groups in recent months, will get two new police stations, with the state govt deciding to split the existing Udayagiri police station into two separate units — Udayagiri North and Udayagiri South. The move aims to ensure more focused policing, better monitoring of sensitive areas, and quicker handling of complaints across the densely populated jurisdiction. Residents are also likely to benefit from easier access to police services, including faster registration of cases and quicker follow-up on complaints.

While approval for the new police stations has already come through, personnel are still waiting for their posts to be sanctioned. However, despite the decision to bifurcate the existing police station, the govt is yet to sanction additional staff for Udayagiri North police station.K S Sundar Raj, DCP (crime and traffic), said a full-fledged police station requires a minimum of 80 personnel, including one inspector, four sub-inspectors, eight assistant sub-inspectors, about 20 head constables, and nearly 60 constables.Police sources say manpower allocation will be crucial for the success of the bifurcation, as the new station will require adequate personnel for round-the-clock duties.Until staffing improves, effectiveness of the new arrangement may remain limited. Udayagiri North police station will be the 19th police station in Mysuru city, which also has exclusive women, cybercrime, and economic offences police stations, along with five traffic police stations. Commissioner of police Seema Latkar confirmed to TOI that a building has been identified for Udayagiri North police station in Rajiv Nagar, and it will soon start functioning. According to officers, the boundaries for the two police station limits have also been clearly marked. The existing police station building will continue to function as Udayagiri South police station, ensuring that policing services remain uninterrupted for residents in the southern part of the area.
