Mysuru: The long-pending demand to preserve Udayaravi, the Mysuru residence of poet laureate Kuvempu, as a memorial once again echoed in Karnataka legislative assembly, drawing attention to the govt’s responsibility towards safeguarding the literary icon’s legacy. The issue was raised by MLA K Harishgowda, prompting renewed assurances from the govt.
Udayaravi, the single-storey heritage structure, is located at Vani Vilas Mohalla, which is part of Chamaraja assembly segment represented by Harishgowda.Kannada and culture minister Shivaraj S Tangadagi said the matter would be discussed in detail with chief minister Siddaramaiah. Emphasising the cultural, historical, and literary importance of Udayaravi, the minister assured legislators that a decision on the memorial project would be taken at the highest level. The prolonged delay in converting Kuvempu’s residence into a museum caused deep disappointment among admirers of the poet. The minister had visited Udayaravi in mid-Jan and held discussions with the family members. The state govt had announced the preservation of Udayaravi as a memorial in the 2018-19 budget. The proposal aimed to conserve the residence and showcase Kuvempu’s life, philosophy, and contribution to Kannada literature. However, the project failed to take off, raising concerns. The MLA urged the govt to respect the family’s wishes and remove procedural bottlenecks. This came after Kuvempu’s daughter Tarini Chidananda submitted a proposal outlining conditions for handing over the property for development as a memorial. The minister confirmed that preliminary discussions with the family took place and assured the House that their proposals would be examined thoroughly in consultation with the CM.
