Mysuru: Despite enforcing road safety measures, Chamarajanagar district did not record any significant decline in road accidents. As against 256 people who lost their lives in 2024, 242 fatalities were recorded in 2025. In addition, 1,130 people were injured in 739 road accidents in 2024, while 1,274 sustained injuries in 824 accidents in 2025. In response to these alarming figures, Regional Transport Authority and police have intensified road safety drives to reduce accidents and ensure better compliance for traffic rules. Police also initiated strict measures to prevent road accidents, including strict enforcement against speeding and drink driving, and against those not wearing helmets and seat belts, along with other harsher penalties. Cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) have been installed at major traffic junctions and circles to spot traffic violations. Besides these, special inspections are being carried out on major roads and key traffic junctions to ease congestion. Despite hefty fines for traffic violations, accidents and fatalities have increased, with 256 road accident deaths and injuries reported on both the national highways that pass through Chamarajanagar district. Chamarajanagar Regional Transport Officer Gayathri said the transport department, police and the district administration have initiated a slew of measures to spread road safety awareness and ensure better compliance for traffic rules at bus stands, railway stations, schools and colleges. She said parents should not allow their minor children to drive two-wheelers. Directions had also been issued to the police to curb bike stunts. Speaking to TOI, Chamarajanagar SP N Mutturaj said police, along with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Regional Transport Authority, conducted a joint inspection and identified 22 black spots on both the national highways, including the Bengaluru-Dindigul national highway passing through Chamarajanagar.
