Shivamogga: BJP MLC Dhananjaya Sarji has urged the govt to address the disparity in allotting engineering seats between govt and private colleges.Speaking in the legislative council on Tuesday, Sarji said out of 1,53,916 engineering seats in Karnataka, only 6,495 are in govt colleges, while 33,000 are in private universities.Sarji questioned the disproportionate distribution of seats, noting that a single private university has 4,320 seats, with 90% (4,020 seats) being allocated to computer science (CS) courses. In contrast, govt colleges have only 10% of their 6,500 seats dedicated to CS.He also highlighted the faculty shortage in private colleges, especially the significant gap in the required number of professors and those available. Sarji demanded that the govt take action to address this imbalance and ensure that students in govt colleges are not inconvenienced.Acknowledging Sarji’s concerns, higher education minister MC Sudhakar said the govt is considering measures to curb the excessive allocation of seats, and would take action against colleges violating norms.
