Bengaluru woman booked for illegal overseas recruitments

Bengaluru: A 24-year-old woman has been booked under the Emigration Act, 1983, for conducting overseas recruitment without the required licence or certificate.The accused, Shashirekha Devanga, a resident of BCMC Layout in Raghuvanahalli, allegedly facilitated the placement of Indian workers abroad without following the proper legal procedures.The case was registered following a complaint from the Protector of Emigrants, Avaneesh Sukla, who covers Karnataka and Goa. In his email dated Sept 6, he stated that Shashirekha violated Sections 10 and 24 of the Emigration Act, which prohibit recruitment without valid certification and prescribe penalties for such offences.Police said Shashirekha claimed to be working as the HR head of a private firm. Preliminary investigation revealed that she conducted recruitment drives in 2024 for software engineer roles. No recruitments were made in 2025, as per available records. Her laptop and mobile phone have been seized and sent to the forensic science laboratory for further analysis.Authorities are still verifying the extent of her involvement, the number of recruitments conducted, the companies she associated with, and the charges levied on applicants.
