Despite its urban surroundings, SSC retains plenty of traditional cricketing character. Its two-tier stands, grass banks and manual scoreboard provide a link to an earlier era, while its rich history makes it one of Asia’s most important Test venues. The India-Sri Lanka contest will be the 47th Test at SSC, putting it second only to Galle among Asian venues in terms of Tests hosted.
The venue could produce a very different challenge from Galle. SSC has generally offered good batting conditions, with teams batting first often piling up big totals. The toss could therefore be crucial. At the same time, the forecast suggests rain could interrupt play on each of the five days, while the Colombo heat is expected to make life difficult for the bowlers. Spinners have taken 45 wickets in the last three Tests at the venue, 10 more than pacers.
India arrive with momentum after their 165-run win in Galle. Padikkal, Rahul, Pant and Suthar were the standout performers, but Gill and Jaiswal will be determined to improve after disappointing scores in the opener. India’s batting depth and Suthar’s emergence have given the team plenty of confidence as they look to secure a 2-0 sweep and boost their hopes of reaching the 2027 World Test Championship final.
Sri Lanka, however, will hope home conditions can help them fight back. Kamil Mishara is set to replace the dropped Nishan Madhushka at the top, while Sahan Arachchige is in contention after strong performances for Sri Lanka A. Pasindu Sooriyabandara is expected to retain his place at No. 3.
India also face a selection call over their spin attack. Saransh Jain has bowled extensively in the nets and could make his Test debut, particularly with Sri Lanka expected to field another left-hander. Kuldeep Yadav, meanwhile, was absent from training sessions, adding to speculation over his place.
With both teams facing contrasting objectives, the Colombo Test promises a battle between India’s momentum and Sri Lanka’s desire for a comeback.
