The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) reportedly deployed a classified tool known as “Ghost Murmur” to locate a stranded US airman in Iran, marking what is believed to be its first operational use in the field. The system was deployed after a US F-15 aircraft was shot down in southern Iran, leaving one crew member stranded. The survivor, identified as “Dude 44 Bravo,” stayed concealed in a mountain crevice for nearly two days in remote, inhospitable terrain.Although the airman activated a Boeing-built Combat Survivor Evader Locator beacon, his precise location could not be confirmed. According to a report by the New York Post, “Ghost Murmur” was then used to verify his position, allowing US forces to move ahead with the rescue operation.

How does ‘Ghost Murmur‘ work?

The system combines artificial intelligence with advanced sensing technology to detect the electromagnetic signature of a human heartbeat, even across vast distances. Using long-range quantum magnetometry, it isolates these signals from background noise and identifies a specific individual.A source described the process as akin to “hearing a voice in a stadium,” except the stadium spans thousands of square miles of desert. “In the right conditions, if your heart is beating, we will find you,” the source said. The name “Ghost Murmur” reflects its function — “murmur” referring to heart rhythms, and “ghost” to locating individuals who have effectively disappeared. The technology is based on developments in quantum magnetometry, including sensors built with microscopic defects in synthetic diamonds, which enable detection of faint biological signals at significantly greater ranges.John Ratcliffe appeared to allude to such capabilities earlier this week, saying the agency possesses “unique capabilities” but declining to provide details. Meanwhile, Donald Trump said during a press briefing that the CIA was able to detect the airman from approximately 40 miles away. While details remain limited, the reported use of “Ghost Murmur” points to a new frontier in surveillance and rescue operations driven by AI and quantum sensing.
