MCC to name and shame property tax defaulters: Commissioner

Mysuru: Several prominent educational institutions, govt departments and even police stations are among property tax defaulters in Mysuru City Corporation (MCC). MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif said in the coming months, the corporation will publish photos of honest tax payers to thank them for their contribution towards the city’s development. “We will also follow a name-and-shame policy towards defaulters,” he warned.The defaulters’ list for 2025-26 shows Dr Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University has defaulted on pay property tax since 2002. Since the 2002-03 financial year, property tax is due from Crawford Hall (Rs 76.81 lakhs) and Yuvaraja College A and B campuses (Rs 2 crores). Both institutions are owned by University of Mysore. Other major govt offices that feature on the MCC defaulters’ list include Teachers Training Institute, BEO office (Mys South), Postal Training Institute, Regional Fire Officer’s office, district police quarters, Krishnaraja police station, Lakshmipuram police station, Vidyaranyapuram police station, Govt first-grade college, Kuvempu Nagar, Govt Urdu school, Chamaraja Double Road, and CADA office to name a few. In ward No 17 (Zone 7), a private educational institution owes property tax for Rs 3.98 crore. Several other private educational institutes, individuals, and state and central govt offices also feature prominently on the list.The MCC commissioner said the corporation will come out with a slew of measures to take the civic body closer to the public, including publishing a master plan on its website and providing an online link for payment of taxes and fees.
