Trust to launch waste collection from 1,000 houses in city

Mangaluru: Sri Ambamaheshwari Seva Trust, which engages in various social service activities, will take up a new project under cluster-2 of its ‘Awake Kudla’ concept. Accordingly, the trust will launch door-to-door waste collection from 1,000 houses in the Mulihitlu area within Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits.Trust general secretary Umanath Kotian told reporters on Tuesday, that the trust worked in coordination with various departments to improve waste and traffic management in the city for the past 10 years. The Awake Kudla initiative was launched by then deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan on April 4, and a mobile application, the Awake Kudla app, was also launched for people to report issues pertaining to waste and traffic management, he said.A Cluster-2 Awake Kudla awareness programme will be launched on Thursday in the presence of Swami Yugeshanandaji of Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru. Door-to-door campaigns will be held at the Port, Cantonment, and Attavar wards as part of the programme, which will be held in association with the MCC, Mangaluru City traffic police, and NGOs. Awareness programmes will be organised through the campaign on traffic, pothole identification and repair, waste management, black spot identification, greenery, and cleanliness, he said.On the door-to-door waste collection initiative planned in Mulihitlu, Kotian said that while the trust workers will collect dry and wet waste every day, green waste, e-waste, and medical waste will be collected once a week. While wet waste will be sent to the waste management unit of the MCC at Pachanady, dry waste will be segregated and processed for reuse, he said, adding that the initiative is likely to start before Jan 15.Trust member Manjula said that under the Cluster-2 Awake Kudla awareness programme, volunteers will visit houses and shops, and identify black spots and potholes in the selected wards. Initiatives will also be taken up to clear black spots and fill potholes with the support of the MCC, she said.Trust member Nayana said that a workshop on competitive exams for govt jobs will be organised for youths from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts at Ramakrishna Math in Mangaluru on Feb 8.Trust president Seetharam A was present.
