Madikeri: Virajpet Municipal Council has decided to take action to clear the encroachment of Gaurikere in Virajpet.During the meeting of the civic body, which was presided over by president Dechamma Kalappa, a resolution was passed to conduct a resurvey to confirm the encroachment.The meeting began with some contention as senior member CK Prithvinath raised concerns about the exclusion of certain issues from the agenda. This led to a heated argument, necessitating police intervention, although some members resisted their entry. Despite the disruption, the president urged Prithvinath to focus on other matters. Congress member Rajinikanth and health standing committee president Poornima raised concerns about perceived discrimination in development funding across wards. The president clarified that additional funds were allocated to newly expanded areas, dismissing claims of bias.Nominated member GG Mohan criticised the behaviour of some municipal staff, citing arrogance and lack of responsiveness. Member Ranji Poonacha highlighted issues related to road widening and unauthorised construction, urging the municipality to reclaim encroached land and address parking problems. The president responded by forming a team to tackle these issues promptly.The meeting also addressed absenteeism among municipal staff, with a resolution to write to the deputy commissioner regarding a female staff member’s continued absence despite occupying official accommodation. BJP members Anita and Ranji Poonacha raised concerns about the water department’s negligence in providing connections and addressing leaks.The president instructed staff to prioritise these issues.
