Hubballi: Along with teaching textbook lessons, teachers should also guide and impart life values to students, said Prasad Abbayya, chairman of the Karnataka Slum Development Board.Addressing a Teachers’ Day event in the Hubballi City zone, organised in honour of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary here on Saturday, Abbayya stated mobile phone usage among today’s children has increased. “Teachers must effectively address this issue by encouraging them to ‘put down the mobile, pick up the book’ in every school and home. Teachers help students enhance their knowledge, skills, and confidence. Their true contribution extends beyond classroom walls. Teachers instil educational values and help uncover the hidden potential in children, guiding them through academic and personal life challenges,” he analysed.Those with social awareness and concern make the best teachers. Teachers’ contributions are crucial for building a strong society and nation. Those who have a mentor behind them and a goal ahead never fail in life. We must remember the guidance of teachers throughout our lives. The sacrifice of teachers is invaluable for making a positive contribution to society, he added.He recalled Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh and said they were the first female teachers to educate oppressed women. “They faced ridicule and insult but persevered. Savitribai Phule is credited with establishing the first school for girls in India and striving for women’s education,” he noted.Kits were distributed to specially-abled students on the occasion, and retired and distinguished teachers were honoured. Rudrakshi mutt seer Basavalinga Maha Swamiji graced the event, where Hubballi City tahsildar Mahesh Gasti, Prof SS Harlapur, Hubballi City block education officer HM Fadneshi, various school teachers, students, and the public were present.
