Sustained public effort needed to make Mandya plastic-free: DC

Mandya: Deputy commissioner Kumara emphasised that maintaining cleanliness is not a one-day effort but a continuous social responsibility that every citizen must uphold. He stressed the need for sustained public participation to make Mandya a plastic-free and environmentally responsible city.Speaking at the Swachh Survekshan awareness programme organised by the City Municipal Council in front of the park at Sri Shivakumara Swamiji Gnana Kendra School, where the programme aimed to educate citizens and reinforce the importance of cleanliness, sanitation, and waste management as part of the nationwide Swachh Survekshan campaign, Kumara observed that true cleanliness begins with a clean mindset.

“A healthy and clean society can be achieved only when citizens change their attitude towards waste disposal,” he said, urging residents not to throw rubbish on roadsides or in public spaces. He called upon households to strictly follow segregation of wet and dry waste at the source to ensure effective waste management.Highlighting the harmful impact of plastic pollution, the DC appealed to the public to minimise plastic usage and adopt eco-friendly alternatives. He also encouraged citizens to plant saplings and grow plants in front of their homes, stating that green cover plays a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance.As part of the programme, officials and volunteers created paintings and murals at prominent locations to communicate messages on hygiene, sanitation, and environmental protection, drawing public attention to the cleanliness drive.City municipal commissioner Pampashree and urban development cell project director Narasimhamurthy were also present.
