Record amount of water released from Harangi dam

Madikeri: The Harangi dam, in Kodagu district, has released a record 27 TMC of water into the river by the end of July this year. Under the guidance of Harangi irrigation department superintendent engineer Satish and executive engineer IK Puttaswamy, the authorities ensured that the dam’s safety was taken care of.Harangi dam is one of the major reservoirs in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka and has contributed immensely to filling the downstream KRS dam near Mandya. The KRS dam reached its maximum level by the end of June.The dam’s maximum water level is 2,856.2 feet. It has stored 7.4 TMC of water. The outflow from the dam is maintained at 2,000 cusecs against an inflow of 6,889 cusecs.Meanwhile, a family residing in Chowdlu village at Somwarpet taluk is suffering during the monsoon due to floodwater entering the house. The family alleged that there is no response so far by the district administration to resolve the issue. The family has decided to boycott all elections from gram panchayat to Lok Sabha.On Tuesday evening, several areas in Kodagu district received incessant rain. The sudden, heavy rain flooded several low-lying areas. Meanwhile, drainage water flowed into the house of Yogendra, in Chowdlu village in Somwarpet. He said that the drains across the village were blocked due to non-maintenance and sewage water overflowed into the houses.
