Mangaluru: Five teachers from private schools in the city are dedicating their free time to support govt schools in rural areas through an initiative named ‘Shiksha Saathi’.Formed in July, Shiksha Saathi aims to provide care, encouragement and a positive learning environment for children studying in govt schools. “Concerns are often raised about government schools lacking basic facilities and quality education. We believe that while these children have immense potential, they often do not receive adequate resources, encouragement, or learning opportunities. Our effort is to bridge this gap by dedicating extra time to these schools and offering a balanced learning experience,” said group member Sujatha Rajesh. As part of its initiative, the team visits one school every month, and spends half-a-day with the students, engaging them in various learning and motivational activities. The other teachers include Asha Priya, Havya Kumari, Lakshmi and Sowmya Amithraj, all of whom work in different sections of schools, including kindergarten, primary, higher primary and high school.Sujatha explained that the group members utilise their fourth-Saturday holidays each month to visit government schools in rural areas. “On these days, we engage children in creative learning activities that complement the curriculum. The sessions include games, drawing, hands-on activities, storytelling, and other interactive methods. Alongside academics, we try to instil values, confidence, and encouragement,” she said. The team also distributes essential learning materials such as books, pencils, crayons, and stationery to boost children’s enthusiasm for education. So far they have supported Govt Higher Primary School in Keddalike, Bantwal taluk and Govt Primary School in Periyadka, Belthangady. Sujatha noted that there will be no activity this month due to the Dasara holiday. “However, If any schools are willing to remain open during vacations for such activities, we are ready to visit,” she said.
