Political parties in Karnataka gear up for council polls

Bengaluru: With Karnataka legislative council elections for four seats—two each from the graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies—due early next year, Congress, BJP and JD(S) have begun preparations, including mobilising their networks among teachers and graduates.Local party functionaries and ticket aspirants have started motivating eligible teachers and graduates to register their names in the voter list. Nov 6 is the last date to apply for inclusion. However, the Election Commission will allow additions even after the final voter list is published, till the date of filing of nominations.Union minister HD Kumaraswamy has directed JD(S) functionaries to coordinate with BJP on voter enrolment and formed a six-member committee, including four MLCs, to oversee the process for these four constituencies.SL Bhojegowda, JD(S) MLC and member of the committee, told TOI that initially BJP agreed to give the Bangalore Teachers constituency to JD(S) and that discussions are underway to secure the south-east graduates’ constituency for the regional party.“We have started the preparations for the election. Voter registration is crucial for the election and hence we are engaging it to register teachers, especially from private schools, in the voter list and it will be done aggressively till the election,” said Bhojegowda.Sources in BJP said they will form a committee to oversee the election oversight process for the MLC election, working closely with JD(S).
