Mangaluru: A two-day philatelic and numismatic exhibition by M Prashanth Shetty, a prominent coin and stamp collector in the city, will be held from Nov 22.It will take place at Dr TMA Pai Convention Centre. The exhibition will be inaugurated by PL Dharma, VC, Mangalore University, in the presence of Prashanth Shetty’s mother, Padma R Shetty.Alongside the exhibition, a seminar will occur on Nov 23 featuring experts. Renowned collector VK Jain will discuss rare currency notes and their history. Guinness record holder Daniel Monteiro will speak on the theme of water birds and bird species. Philatelist Jayaprakash Rao will talk about enhancing collections. Prashanth Shetty will give a presentation on the gold coins of the Western Ganga dynasty, and Markad Prabhakar Kamath will discuss the Falkland Islands.The exhibition will showcase rare coins and stamps, including Prashanth Shetty’s collection of 310 varieties of Ganga dynasty coins, the largest held by any individual. It will also feature 2,100 varieties of British India coins, including 650 types, and over 800 rare coins from more than 40 countries, such as 17th-century African coins, and coins from China, Japan, and South Asia.Additionally, there will be over 2,000 historically significant stamps and 1,500 postcards on display. Unique stamps printed on materials like glass, shell, gold, ceramic, diamond, and microchip, as well as the first Indo-Portuguese stamps from 1840, will also be exhibited. These exhibits offer insights into world history and significant events. The organisers have announced free entry for students, teachers, and the public.
