Mom’s plea challenging Ranya’s detention binned

Bengaluru: The high court Friday dismissed a habeas corpus petition filed by HP Rohini, mother of actor Ranya Rao, challenging the preventive detention of her daughter under provisions of Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974, or Cofeposa.A division bench of Justices Anu Sivaraman and Vijayakumar A Patil rejected the petition. The order copy is yet to be uploaded.Ranya was arrested on March 3 after she was caught smuggling 14.2kg of gold at Kempegowda International Airport. On April 22, a preventive detention order was passed against her by invoking Cofeposa.Challenging the same, Rohini claimed the authorities did not follow due process of law while taking her daughter under preventive detention. On the other hand, authorities defended their action, claiming the detained actor was working for a syndicate involved in gold smuggling, and that it was not a one-off incident.
